A Tragic End: The Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei Dies Following an Attack Involving Benzene
The participant of the Paris Olympics, Ugandan runner Rebecca Cheptegei, has tragically passed away following an attack in which benzene was employed. This was reported by the Ugandan Olympic Committee.
The President of the Ugandan Olympic Committee, Donald Rukara, stated: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei following the brutal attack on her life.”
On September 3, Cheptegei was subjected to the assault, resulting in severe burns in 75% of the cases. Preliminary information suggests that the incident occurred in the vicinity of the athlete’s residence, where she was attacked using benzene.
33-year-old Cheptegei previously participated in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Paris, finishing in 44th place. In 2023, she achieved second place in the marathon in Uganda and ranked 14th in the world championships.
